A STATEMENT TO THE LIBRARY USERS AND SCHOOL COMMUNITY OF MAYWOOD:

On Thursday afternoon, Feburary 5, 2015, an adult used a racial epithet to one of a group of students at the public library, in the context of requesting a lower volume.  The library does not condone bias language but was not made aware of the incident while the adult was on site.

The incident took place shortly after 3 PM, when the middle school students arrive from the Maywood Avenue School.

Parents and students are reminded that the library is (1) open to all, and (2) that respect is needed to and by all library users.  The noise level in the library is unacceptable after school, and the students must take responsibility for lowering their voices.

The library is open to all:  but the library is not the mall, the park, or a day care center. Parents remain responsible for their children and their children’s behavior, whether or not the parent is on site with the child. The library’s patron code of conduct, children in the library, and student pick up/drop off policies are accessible on the library’s web site at http://maywood.bccls.org/maywood-library/policies

Parents are also reminded that students must be picked up before 5:30 pm when the Library closes on Thursdays and Fridays.  Staff may call the Maywood Police to take custody of children who have not been picked up by closing time.
